Estonia is as big as the Netherlands. It is the northernmost country of the three Baltic States, neighboring Russia and only 75 km from Finland with which it is part of the Finno-Ugric linguistic group. Forested on 45% of its territory, Estonia has more than 1521 islands and lakes. A third of its population is Russian-speaking.
As soon as it regained its independence from the USSR in 1991, Estonia applied for membership of the European Union and NATO, organizations it joined in early 2004. In 2011, the country became the 17th member state of the eurozone.

Did you know: Estonia is the most digitalized country in Europe
Estonia deserves its nickname of e-stonia, the e-country. The inhabitants no longer print anything.
No bus ticket, school report, or medical prescription. The country saves one height of the Eiffel Tower in reams of paper per month, according to the e-Estonia Showroom. Since 2014, an e-resident status has been offered to those who want to start a business in Estonia. They are 8,000, from 125 countries, to have seized the opportunity.

Tallinn "jewel of the Baltic"
Located in a bay of the Gulf of Finland, just opposite Helsinki, the old Reval has the nostalgia of distant centuries and immerses the visitor in the time of guilds and knights. Ramparts, Gothic bell towers, cobbled and winding streets, secret courtyards, medieval squares lined with houses with colorful gables... the old town, listed by Unesco in 1997, is distinguished by its intact medieval layout and its authentic surrounding wall with 26 watchtowers: a rarity!
Tallinn is renowned for its medieval fairs and festivals, for its nightlife where bars and clubs are always lively winter and summer. Without forgetting the beautiful walks to take in Kadriorg Park, the marina of Pirita, the old fishing village of Kalamaja, and the visits not to be missed at the seaplane port, the Teleskivi market and the unusual new Noblessener district

Tartu, the university town
The university town of Tartu sits on the Emajõgi River. The large student population and the wealth of museums mean that the city is always lively.
Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia with 148,000 inhabitants and also the oldest in the Baltic countries first mentioned in 1030.

The Estonian National Museum in Tartu
Inaugurated in 2016 and dressed in a glass skin, the elegant concrete building, all in length of 355 meters by 71, placed on a former Soviet airport runway, straddling lake and forest, symbolizes a land that has healed its past, and is now ready to take off for its future.
Through the exhibitions and events in the museum, everyone can get a glimpse of everyday Estonian life through the ages. Touch screens provide a hands-on experience. It is thus possible to observe what an Estonian house looked like, to discover the local cuisine and to become familiar with the local lifestyles, languages and costumes. Attention is also paid to other nations, especially those of the Finno-Ugric peoples.
